The Canadian Breastfeeding Research Network

A national network of Canadian breastfeeding researchers focused on collaboration to achieve breastfeeding protection, promotion and support.

The Benefits of Breastfeeding

Health Canada recommends that babies be fed ONLY breastmilk for the first six (6) months due to the many health benefits for babies, including:

  • Contributes to optimal growth & development,

  • Builds strong immune systems, and

  • Reduces risk of illness

Breastfeeding also has a number of benefits for mothers such as reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer, heart disease and Type II diabetes.
